How to choose the right car charger

A good car charger turns the 12V socket (the old cigarette lighter) into fast USB charging. It matters most on motorway trips, ride-hailing shifts and when you use Google Maps for hours, since navigation drains the battery quickly. Cheap no-name chargers often charge slowly and can run hot, so it is worth buying a known brand.

How many watts do you need?

• Phone only: about 20 to 30W over USB-C is enough to fast charge most iPhones and Android phones.
• Phone and tablet together: look for 45W or more on the USB-C port plus a second port.
• Laptop in the car: choose 65W or more on a single USB-C port, and check that your laptop charges over USB-C.

Fast charging depends on standards such as USB Power Delivery, where the charger and phone agree on the right voltage. When several ports are used at once, the total power is shared, so each port may get less than its maximum.
