How to choose the right power bank

A power bank is your backup when the light goes or when you are away from a socket for hours. Choose by how many charges you need, how fast you want to charge, and what you are charging.

Capacity: mAh is not the full story

A 10000mAh power bank does not give your phone 10000mAh. Power is lost when the battery voltage is converted for your phone, so real output is usually around two thirds of the printed number. As a rough guide, 10000mAh gives a typical phone about two full charges, and 20000mAh about four. For laptops, look at Wh (watt-hours), which tells you the actual energy stored.

Output watts

• 20W to 30W: fast charging for iPhone and most Android phones.
• 45W: faster Samsung charging and tablets.
• 100W and above: for charging a laptop from the power bank.

Built-in cables and magnetic models

Built-in cables mean one less thing to forget. Magnetic wireless power banks snap onto the back of an iPhone with MagSafe or a magnetic case, so you can keep using the phone while it charges. Qi2 models follow the newer magnetic standard from the Wireless Power Consortium.

Flying with a power bank

Airlines usually allow power banks up to 100Wh in cabin baggage, and they are not allowed in checked luggage. A 20000mAh bank is around 74Wh, which is within that limit. Always check your airline's rules before you fly.
