Earbuds & Headphones

How to choose the right earbuds or headphones

Start with how you will use them. Earbuds are small and easy to carry for commutes, the gym and office calls. Over-ear headphones are more comfortable for long online classes, travel and late-night movies. Wired earphones still make sense if you want zero charging and no delay.

Noise cancelling (ANC) and call mics (ENC)

ANC uses small microphones to cancel steady background sound such as fans, generators and traffic, so you can keep the volume lower. ENC works on your voice during calls, cutting out noise around you so the other person hears you clearly. Many models now offer both. You can read more about how active noise control works.

Battery life and Bluetooth version

Earbud battery is usually quoted as a total with the charging case, so check the hours per charge too. Newer Bluetooth versions such as 5.3 and 5.4 connect faster and hold a steadier link. If you game on your phone, look for a gaming or low-latency mode so sound stays in sync with the screen.

Wired is not dead

Phones without a headphone jack can use digital Type-C earphones, and laptops still work well with a 3.5mm wired headset. Need to plug old earphones into a new phone? See our USB-C and audio adapters.

Keep your earbuds charging well with a reliable fast charger and clean them now and then, as earwax on the mesh is a common reason sound gets weaker over time.
